| As
the summer of 2002 commences so do the efforts of our new organizer Jordan
El-Hag. A somewhat recent addition to the IBEW Local 1430 team, Mr. El-Hag
has proven himself an asset to our community. Bob Meyer, Jeff Tomlins, and
Jordan El-Hag have thus far organized just under 100 new members.
The process of organizing can be a grueling one at times, but 1430 utilizes
a variety of tools to streamline the process when they are warranted.
The NLRB can be petitioned for an election once 30% of the targeted group
have signed authorization cards. In addition, 1430 aims to get more than
51% of the groups signatures to achieve a majority. This majority
gives us the ability to negotiate card check recognition. For card check
recognition a neutral third party is used, usually a Federal Mediation
and Conciliation Service Commissioner, to validate the signatures and
the amount of cards. The company then recognizes the union as the collective
bargaining representative.
Using these policies 1430 has expedited the joining of new members to
the union. Snapple (also known as Mr.Natural) has joined with 16 members,
Ro & Ke laundry with 50 members, and Vitolite Electric Sales Co. with
7 members.
We currently have two elections pending at Croton Egg Farm in Brewster
and Polder, Inc. in Port Chester. Unfair Labor Practice charges have been
filed against Croton Egg Farm and we have begun informational picketing
at several key locations. Any member interested in lending a hand please
contact the union office.
If you know of anyone interested in organizing their workplace contact
your steward or a member of the union staff.
